The European Union Prize for Literature

European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL).
Description
The aim of the annual European Union Prize for Literature is to showcase the best emerging authors in Europe.
Launched by the European Commission in 2009, the prize is open to the 37 countries participating in the Creative Europe programme. The prize is managed by a consortium consisting of the European Booksellers Federation, the European Writers' Council and the Federation of European Publishers.
Objective
The purpose of the prize is to:
- Focus on the creativity and richness of diversity of contemporary European literature;
- To increase awareness of European literature;
- Help cross-border sales of books;
- To increase interest in the publishing, selling and reading of foreign literature.
How it works
Every year, the national juries of a third of the participating countries nominate their authors for awards (overseen by the management consortium), thus allowing all the countries and different languages to be represented every three years.
Following that, the award jury selects a candidate from each of the participating countries on the basis of the requirements set out by the European Commission.
